When do you need an occupancy permit or final inspection certificate?

An occupancy permit is required for all new buildings or major alterations and additions to existing buildings. It is also a legal requirement in situations where the intended use of a building is changing, to ensure it meets any new compliance requirements. This permit is a legal document that certifies the building, after all work is completed, is safe for its designated use.

Smaller building works, including minor alterations or home extensions, do not require an occupancy certificate as the existing one still applies. Instead, these works only require a certificate of final inspection, indicating that they have been assessed by a registered building surveyor and are compliant with all building regulations.
